Instagram is gaining traction as the newest place to build a business, but with the new changes ahead as to what you see in your feed and when, it’s time to take a long, hard look at how to make sure your posts are seen and engaged with.
What Is Instagram?
Instagram is now one of the most important social media tools in your social media arsenal. If you’re not already on Instagram, you should be. Instagram is a photo sharing app that is downloaded to your phone where you share pictures and short video clips to your feed.
Why Is It So Important?
If you’re into the business of blogging, building a brand or just want to create a cohesive feed that attracts the kind of followers you want, then it is imperative you invest some time and energy into Instagram.
1) Create a Theme
It took me a long time to figure out what a theme was. My Instagram started out as a personal one restricted to my friends, but when I opened it up to the public, most of the pictures stayed but they didn’t have a theme.
A theme can be anything. It can include particular colours, types of photos or anything else you want to base it around. By having a theme you make your Instagram feed easy to look at and it makes it easy for anyone who find you to understand what you’re about in a quick glance. I deleted all my old photos and am re-starting with a dreamy white based theme with occasional pops of colour.

2) Edit Consistently
Editing consistently means using the same filters or types of settings to edit all your photos to create a theme. Check out the feeds of some of your favourite instagrammers. Most if not all the photos will have the same feel so that they look like they came out of the same album.
While Instagram’s own editing features are great, most gurus suggest VSCOCAM, Afterlight and Facetune for editing. For adding text, you need Phonto and finally if you want to put your pictures in cool layouts, Instagram has it’s own layout app which you can download for free.

3) Use Hashtags Consistently
Love them or not, but hashtags are the one thing you need to get consistent likes and engagement, not just from your followers but to get found by others.
There is a hashtag etiquette, though, no more than 3 hashtags in your caption, and then the rest in the first comment after the picture. Research the best hashtags to use for your industry, and not only will this help you get found but also for you to find others who are doing the same thing and make a connection.

4) Capture How Many Users Find You Through Instagram
Instagram does not allow you to post clickable links anywhere but the bio. It’s really tough to track through Google Analytics as Instagram doesn’t show up in the social media list of referrers.
Elle and Company Design have the perfect solution for this dilemma and suggest you create a separate Instagram page to capture how many people are coming through on Instagram. This has been a game changer for me to see how popular this social media platform has been for me and it can be for you as well.
